Prior to starting his own firm, Kaplan was an attorney with the law firm Coughlan, Semmer & Lipman, LLP, in San Diego, California for 16 years. There he worked with renowned trial attorneys on complex civil and white-collar criminal matters. Kaplan focused on the representation of professionals in liability matters, including the defense of law firms, lawyers and accountants in malpractice actions. Kaplan also handled a variety of business litigation matters, such as contract disputes in state and federal court, embezzlement cases on behalf of both employers and employee defendants, fraud matters, and partnership disputes, just to name a few examples.
Using the litigation skills gained over years of practice at his previous firm and since opening his own practice, Kaplan has amassed the experience to handle lawsuits of any size, from the relatively simple to the most complex and detailed cases spanning years of activity and thousands of documents.
Kaplan received a Bachelor of Arts with honors from the University of California at Irvine in 1991, with a focus on law and criminal justice. He graduated in 1995 from University of California Hastings College of Law in San Francisco.
Kaplan was admitted to the California State Bar in December 1995, and has been admitted to the Southern and Central Federal District Courts, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He has appeared and argued appellate cases and tried cases before the courts in San Diego.

Mr. Kaplan has been a member of the San Diego County Bar association since his admission to the bar in 1995. He also serves on the Board of Directors of several organizations in San Diego. In 2014, Mr. Kaplan was a Top Attorney Finalist in the Litigation Category, awarded by the San Diego Daily Transcript. He has been honored as a Top Attorney in the area of Litigation by San Diego magazine in 2017 and prior years.
