The Law Offices of Daniel A. Kaplan was founded in September 2011. Its principal has 21 years of experience in the San Diego and California legal market. From 1996 to 2011 , Mr. Kaplan was an attorney with the law firm Coughlan, Semmer & Lipman, LLP, located in San Diego, California. There he worked with renowned trial attorneys R.J. Coughlan, Michael Lipman and Robert Semmer on complex civil and white-collar criminal matters. Mr. Kaplan’s practice focused on the representation of professionals in liability matters, including the defense of law firms, lawyers, and accountants in malpractice actions. Mr. Kaplan also handled, a variety of business litigation matters, such as contract disputes in state and federal court, embezzlement cases on behalf of both victims and defendants, fraud matters, and partnership disputes, just to name a few examples.

Early in his career at Coughlan, Semmer & Lipman, LLP, Mr. Kaplan participated in the defense of individuals charged with various state and federal white collar crimes. This work included handling large scale internal investigations, legal research, motion preparation and sentencing matters. Mr. Kaplan was admitted to the California State Bar in December 1995, and has been admitted to the Southern and Central Federal District Courts, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He has appeared and argued appellate cases and tried cases before the courts in San Diego.

More Background

Mr. Kaplan graduated in 1995 from University of California Hastings College of Law in San Francisco.

During law school, he served as a judicial extern to Judge Stuart R. Polak of the San Francisco Superior County Superior Court where he gained valuable insight into the judicial decision making process used by the courts. He also served as an associate articles editor for the Hastings North by Northwest Journal of Environmental Law.

During law school, he was a law clerk at the Law Office of Corey Birnberg in San Francisco, focused on personal injury law.

He also worked as a law clerk at the law firm of Gasset, Perry and Frank in San Jose, practicing defense litigation.

Prior to attending law school, he served as a clerk for the law firm of Farnell and Brown in Newport Beach California.

Mr. Kaplan received a Bachelor of Arts with honors from the University of California at Irvine in 1991, with a focus on law and criminal justice.
